A Jesus-centered podcast where STRONG OPINIONS are weakly held about Christianity, pop culture, and beer.
Listen on:
The Go To Hell Pod
A couple of guys who discuss Christianity, life, craft beer, and much more. We are unfiltered and dive deep into Jesus-centered Christianity and understand how we as everyday believers are to respond to the things we encounter in our current world.
Tim & Colton have a mashup podcast that includes the breaking news of beloved actor Matthew Perry’s untimely death. We reflect on Perry and the show that made him famous, Friends. Other discussions include music with Smashing Pumpkins, and why we love live and acoustic versions of many songs. Then we end with a somber discussion about the hatred manifesting itself from the conflict in Israel and Gaza. “Hate begets hate; violence begets violence; toughness begets a greater toughness. We must meet the forces of hate with the power of love.” – MLK My Old Friend Is Ripping Down Posters of Kidnapped Children Beer of the Week Alesmith Brewing Co. Tim & Colton felt it was important to share our thoughts about the crisis in Israel. So we sat down for a long, wide-ranging discussion about the issue. The discussion includes: a primer on the history of Zionism and the modern state of Israel; a broader discussion of Israel going back to Abraham, Isaac and Ishmail; end times and Revelation; anti-semitism and Islamaphobia; and how we believe Christians should look at the conflict as of today. This week, friend of the show, Andy, stops by to guest-host for Colton, who became a new dad with the birth of his baby. Congrats to Colton and his wife!!! First, we mourn the passing of another musical giant, Jimmy Buffett. Seriously, this is getting to be too much. The Godfather of Island Country (not beach bum soft rock… go to hell NPR), he was both ubiquitous and underappreciated. Then Tim and Colton discuss two articles that deal with the de-churching in America. Why are Middle-Aged Americans not going back to church? Is the American over-scheduling, over-achieving way of life leading to churchgoing getting crowded out? Has our agrarian and industrial-age model of church run its course and is in need of a simple replacement? Home church? Maybe. But let’s be honest that home church has downsides too. https://www.wsj.com/articles/church-attendance-religion-generation-x-6ee5f11d https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/07/christian-church-communitiy-participation-drop/674843/ Beer of the Week Stone Brewing Co. After a long discussion about the greatness of the late Robbie Robertson and The Band, Tim & Colton discuss the Devil, Beelzebub, Lucifer, Baphomet, Mephistopheles... Satan. Who is Satan? What is Satan? What are proper, healthy understandings of Satan and his demonic minions? What are some unhealthy perceptions of The Accuser and Father of Lies? Beer of the Week 1852 Brew Co. In this first part of a mega episode, Tim talks about the Netflix documentary Wham!, about the 1980's pop sensation Wham! The doc is a fascinating insight into the duo of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley that topped the charts and made young girls swoon in the mid-80s. With it comes important lessons. Tim & Colton discuss: The ridiculous postmodern fetish to sexualize close, meaningful relationships between friends, particularly males. Are parents sometimes dream crushers or Daedalus warning Icarus not to fly too high to the sun? Finally, we discuss George Michael and the inner demons he dealt with. A man who seemed to have everything (and aware of it) was actually a deeply insecure man who struggled to grasp his self-worth. It's a lesson to us to try not to judge what's on the outside and to understand what others are going through on the inside. It'll make us better Jesus followers. Be Kind. Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Beer of the Week: Stone Brewing Co. Two Kiwis Double IPA 1852 Brew Co. Tim and Colton take the week off from Christianity and church talk and this will either be the least or most listened to Go To Hell podcast. It’s an indulgent, detailed, marathon of a telling of our Inaugural San Diego Beer Marathon™ where Tim and Colton, joined by our friends Erik and Nolan, visited 18 San Diego breweries in 48 hours. Oh, we consumed much more than 18 beers in that time. We detail the breweries we visited and what we drank; rating and ranking them as well. What a trip! If you don’t like beer or care about men trying feats of strength, we’ll see you back next week when we return to our usual topics. In our previous episode, we discussed the Spirit and how we should follow it to initiate change. Tim and Colton delve deeper into the Spirit and prayer and get personal, admitting that the spiritual side of our faith is our weakness. Is it your weakness too? Tim and Colton had the honor of sitting in with folks at the Jesus Collective and discussing what Jesus-centered leadership looks like when transitioning from a Bounded Set to a Centered Set culture. (00:26:08) In this episode, we bring that discussion to the podcast. This is not a podcast just for pastors and church leaders. We distill the discussion down to us as individuals as we try to live a Jesus-centered life in our workplace, friend groups, and family. Item of note, this discussuon deals a lot with the Hopy Spirit, something we have not dealt with on the podcast. We confess why, as well. 1. The Spirit is the agent of change2. Get proficient in perceiving the presence of the Spirit in our midst3. When we discern where the Spirit is moving, our job is to experiment with the Spirit and the measure of our success by new learnings and shifting imaginations4. You should expect resistance5. Form rhythms – personally and corporately – that help us live healthy and sustainable lives6. Competence develops credibility7.
