American Christian or Christian American?

This podcast was originally recorded on November 15, 2022, the week after we recorded our episode We've Got To Do Better, responding to Buzzfeed remarks about people leaving the church. Tim and Colton start with a follow-up discussion about tithing and the importance of giving to your church. Then we transition to what will be an ongoing theme in the podcast… is your faith shaped more by being an American or by being a follower of Jesus? Specifically, are your views on issues like patriotism, taxes, war, abortion, women's rights, etc. first and foremost Christian? Or is your Christianity really shaped first by being a conservative, progressive, or libertarian and a Christian, second?

Go to Hell at the Movies: Chariots of Fire

Tim and Colton break down the movie Chariots of Fire, a 1981 British historical drama that tells the story of two athletes in the 1924 Olympics. Eric Liddell, a devout Scottish Christian who runs for the glory of God, and Harold Abrahams, an English Jew who runs to overcome prejudice. The film was directed by Hugh Hudson and starred Ian Charleson and Ben Cross. Chariots of Fire won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Phone Call To God

We start with a TikTok video by Dan McClellan in which he responds to a strange video claiming if you don't call Jesus by his "correct" name, you're going to hell. Next we struggle with how one becomes a Jesus follower. Becoming a Christ follower is often sold as simply saying a prayer and "letting Jesus into your heart". For many of us, that's been our experience. But for others, it might be more complicated than that. Do we discourage those who haven't had that converstion experience? Should we be more nuanced in describing how one becomes a follower of The Way.
